Chapter Ten
At six p.m. sharp, thereâs a knock at the door. I hitch up my dress a little as itâs a bit too long without heels, and answer it.
âOh my,â I say without meaning to, as I lay my eyes on an actual slice of heaven. Jude McDonagh, in the most gorgeous, perfectly-fitting tuxedo. His eyes are sparkling in the light from the hallway, and that hair, as perfectly imperfect as ever. My mouth is suddenly dryer than the Sahara.
âYou look absolutely incredible.â He smiles, almost nervously and for the briefest moment, he furrows his brow. Iâm relieved that he seems as affected by me in the dress that he chose as I am by him, my personal James Bond fantasy, personified.
âWell, you donât look half bad.â I smile. âWhere are we going?â
âCome on,â he holds a hand out to me, âIâll tell you on the way.â
I take his hand and hitch my dress up again as I step into the shoes he had left with Natalia; he thought ahead to leave three pairs that I could choose from, obviously, because heâs perfect.
âNo,â he stops me, and I look at him, confused. âPut your boots on. You can put your heels on in the car.â
âNo,â I laugh, âIâm not putting boots on with this dress,â I protest.
âNel, itâs winter, its snowy and icy and freezing. I donât want you to break your neck. Just put them on until youâre in the car, please.â How can I say no to that or the caring plea in his eyes? I huff and stuff my feet into my clumpy boots, feeling very strange in a stunning evening gown, dripping with Natsâ elegant diamond jewellery that she bought for her wedding, and feeling as though Iâm about to go for a country stroll. âYou need a coat, too.â He smirks, and I roll my eyes at him dramatically.
Jude smiles, victorious, as I put on my coat, then bend down to pick up my shoes, which he holds out a hand to take, then holds out the other one for mine. I hitch up my dress, and with my hand in his, and my tummy lurching into my throat, we head to his car.
After driving for an hour, Christmas songs playing on Judeâs car stereo the entire time but for once, not irritating me as I listen to him sing along as he drives, we pull into the driveway of a large country hotel. Thereâs a huge Christmas tree near the lit doorway, and I feel comforted by the colourful lights, twinkling against the snow-covered ground.
I can see people getting out of cars at the entrance and making their way up the red-carpeted steps as their car is taken and parked for them.
As Jude stops the car, he gets out and quickly makes his way around to open my door and help me out. I step out, feeling less ridiculous in my coat when I feel the freezing air on my bare leg as the above the knee split on my gown falls open.
